AKARTA: The Jakarta Police arrested a man in West Jakarta on Thursday for allegedly raping his daughter over the past eight years.
After the child's mother reported the abuse, the Jakarta Police arrested the suspect, identified as Taryono, 36, at his house in Srensengan Sawah Kembangan.
"We have detained the suspect. Taryono is her own father," Jakarta Police Chief of General Crime Reserves Sr. Comr. Muhammad Iriawan said, as quoted by detik.com.
Iriawan said the suspect had, allegedly, repeatedly raped his daughter Santi (not her real name), since she was nine years old.
Iriawan said Taryono blackmailed Santi into keeping the incest a secret.
"The threat was, if she tells anyone, her father would leave the house and that he would not feed the family," he said.
As she turned 17 Santi finally told her mother. The suspect will be charged with rape, a crime which carries a minimum sentence of five years.
Earlier this month, residents in Tambora, West Jakarta found an unconscious woman with bloodied thighs and ripped clothing. The woman, a university student from Karawang, West Java, claimed to have been raped by several men. Meanwhile, a 16-year-old-girl, living in a boarding house on Jl. Karet Pedurenan, South Jakarta was raped and robbed by a man she met over the phone. - JP
